One-stimulus question

A divided country on the map

  • Units 3 and 4
  • 7 points
  • About 25 minutes

Seven short parts (A–G) built around one source, such as a data table, graph, map or image, drawing on ideas from at least two units. Some parts ask you to read the source, others to connect it to course ideas. On the exam: Question 2 of 3 in the 1-hour-15-minute free-response section (Section II). The three questions together are 50% of your exam score, so each is worth about 16.7%; 7 points, one for each part A–G. College Board suggests about 25 minutes per question, including up to 5 minutes to plan. No calculator.

The question and its sources

The source describes a map of Country V. Use the source below to answer all seven parts, (a) through (g). Write in complete sentences.

Map of Country V (described in words)

The map shows Country V, a unitary state. A high mountain range runs east to west across the middle of the country.

South of the mountains are the capital city, the country's two main seaports and about 80 percent of its population. Shading shows that most people in the south speak Language S, which is Country V's only official language.

North of the mountains, the population is smaller and lives mostly in small towns and farming villages. Shading shows that most people in the north speak Language N. Symbols mark several oil fields in the north and an oil pipeline that crosses the mountains to a southern seaport.

A dense network of highways and railways connects the capital with the other southern cities. Only one highway crosses the mountains to the north, and no railway does.

A note on the map states that in the most recent regional election, a northern party calling for greater self-government won 70 percent of the vote in the north.
