Free-response practice
Statistics free-response questions
Free-response questions (FRQs) are the part of the AP® Statistics exam where you write your own answers. Here they're grouped the way the exam uses them. Write your answer, then score it yourself with the rubric and a model answer, or sign in for free AI scoring.
24 questions · 4 types
Question 1: Formulating questions and collecting data
A multi-part question about a study's design: you identify sampling methods or study types, explain whether results can be generalized or show cause and effect, describe or choose a display, and write a valid investigative question. It focuses on Practices 1 and 2.
On the exam: Question 1 of 4 (official name: Multi-Focus on Practices 1 and 2). Section II has 4 free-response questions in 90 minutes (50% of the score); each question is worth 10 points and 12.5% of the score. The exam is fully digital in Bluebook, a graphing calculator with statistical capabilities is expected, and the formula sheet and tables are provided. Plan on about 22 minutes for one.

Question 2: Analyzing data and interpreting results
A multi-part question built on a data set or summary statistics: you calculate things like outlier fences, compare distributions, pick the right measure of center or spread, and justify a claim in context. It focuses on Practices 3 and 4.
On the exam: Question 2 of 4 (official name: Multi-Focus on Practices 3 and 4).
