Unit 3 · Topic 3.3

3.3 Beauty and Aesthetics (Belleza y estética)

Ideas of beauty change across cultures and over time, and media and social media shape them strongly. This topic gives you the vocabulary and the arguments for readings and essays on beauty standards, self-image and what art considers beautiful, plus the Spanish structures for giving and supporting opinions.

Key terms

  • la belleza
  • la estética
  • el canon de belleza
  • los estereotipos
  • la autoestima
  • la imagen corporal

Beauty changes

Un canon de belleza is the set of features a society treats as beautiful at a given time. The word comes from the rules of proportion that ancient Greek sculptors used for the ideal body. Ideals keep shifting. In Velázquez's day, pale skin signaled that a person didn't work outdoors; in many places today, a tan suggests vacations. Fashion magazines have promoted very different ideal body shapes from one decade to the next.

Beauty ideals are also tied to class, race and history. Critics in Latin America have long pointed out that advertising and television favored light skin and European features over Indigenous and Afro-descendant ones. Recently, many campaigns and brands have begun featuring a wider range of faces and bodies, though people disagree about how much has really changed.

Media and self-image

Filters and edited photos make an impossible look seem normal. Many studies link heavy social media use to worries about body image among teenagers, though researchers still debate how much social media causes those worries. La autoestima (self-esteem) and la imagen corporal (body image) are the key words.

Societies have tried different responses. In 2006 Madrid's fashion week barred models with a body mass index below 18, one of the first rules of its kind. Movements for body acceptance (la aceptación corporal, often called body positive in Spanish too) push for more realistic images. People also disagree about makeup: some see it as self-expression, art or confidence, others as a response to social pressure. A good essay can grant part of the other side's point.

Art and the idea of beauty

La estética means aesthetics, the study of beauty and taste, but in everyday Spanish it also means appearance, and un centro de estética is a beauty salon. Artists have often challenged ideals: Frida Kahlo painted her joined eyebrows and faint mustache in her self-portraits instead of hiding them, and she is now an icon of beauty on one's own terms.

Spanish has useful words for judging taste. Cursi describes something too sweet, sentimental or showy to be in good taste; el buen gusto is good taste. Opinions like these are perspectives, which makes them good material for comparing cultures.

Giving and supporting opinions

Beauty is a classic essay topic, so get the grammar of opinion right. Verbs of belief in the affirmative take the indicative; in the negative, or with doubt, they take the subjunctive. Expressions of value or need (es importante que, es necesario que) take the subjunctive; expressions of certainty (es cierto que, es evidente que) take the indicative.

StructureMoodExample
Creo que…indicativeCreo que las redes sociales influyen mucho en los jóvenes.
No creo que…subjunctiveNo creo que los filtros sean siempre dañinos.
Es importante que…subjunctiveEs importante que las marcas muestren cuerpos diversos.
Es cierto que…indicativeEs cierto que la publicidad vende un ideal.
Aunque… (a fact)indicativeAunque la moda cambia, el deseo de gustar sigue igual.

Worked examples

Try each one yourself first, then open the solution.

  1. Example 1

    Writing a qualified thesis

Essay prompt: «¿Deberían prohibirse los filtros de belleza en las redes sociales para los menores de edad?» Write a thesis that takes a clear position and sets up two arguments from the sources.

    Show the solution
    1. Step 1: Decide what you'll argue. A qualified answer works if it still answers the question: here, no to a ban, yes to a different rule.
    2. Step 2: State it in one sentence that names the condition: «Aunque los filtros pueden afectar la autoestima de los adolescentes, no creo que prohibirlos sea la mejor solución; sería más eficaz exigir que las plataformas indiquen claramente cuándo una imagen ha sido modificada.»
    3. Step 3: Check the grammar. «No creo que… sea» uses the subjunctive after a negative belief, and «exigir que las plataformas indiquen» uses the subjunctive after a demand. «Aunque… pueden» is indicative because it grants a fact.
    4. Step 4: Set up your arguments: one source showing the harm (to support the concession), and one showing that labels or education work (to support your solution). Then build each body paragraph around a reason, not around a single source.

Answer: A thesis that grants the harm, rejects a ban and proposes labeling, with correct subjunctive after no creo que and exigir que.

Common mistakes

  • Using the indicative after a negative belief: «No creo que los filtros son…». Use the subjunctive: «No creo que los filtros sean…».
  • Reading «la estética» only as “aesthetics.” It can also mean appearance, or a beauty salon (un centro de estética).
  • Making sweeping statements about how “all” people in a country see beauty. Ground claims in the sources and avoid stereotypes.
  • Writing a thesis that just restates the prompt. Your thesis has to choose a side or a clear condition.

On the exam

  • Beauty and media topics fit the argumentative essay well: sources may include an article on beauty standards, a survey on social media and self-esteem, and an interview with an expert. Take a clear position and use all three sources.
  • In reading questions, look for whether the author reports a trend neutrally or argues against it. Words like imponer (impose) or presión (pressure) signal a critical view.

5 questions on 3.3 Beauty and Aesthetics (Belleza y estética). Pick an answer to see if you got it, and why.

Paragraph 1
Exacto.
