The essay
6 pointsIn many works of art from West and Central Asia, writing is an important visual element. Select and completely identify a work of art from West and Central Asia (500 BCE–1980 CE) in which writing or calligraphy is an important visual element. You may select a work from the list below or any other relevant work from the same content area. Explain how the writing in the work communicates religious, political, or social ideas. In your response you should do the following: • Give at least two accurate identifiers for the work you choose. • State a claim or thesis that answers the prompt, can be defended art historically, and sets up your line of reasoning. • Back up your claim with at least two specific pieces of visual and/or contextual evidence. • Explain how your evidence supports your claim. • Show a complex understanding: strengthen, qualify, or extend your claim, for example by explaining connections, adding nuance, or weighing other interpretations. Identify your selected work as fully as you can: title or designation, artist and/or culture of origin, date of creation, and materials. The identification point needs at least two accurate identifiers; if you choose a work from the list, they must be identifiers beyond the title given there. Extra identifiers that turn out to be wrong won't cost you the point. • Folio from a Qur’an • Dome of the Rock • Basin (Baptistère de St. Louis)
